A Brand with a Special Invitation

The Minnesota chapter of the Jane Austen Society of North America was ready to bring Jane Austen into the 21st century and invited Van Santen Studio to the party. Naturally, I rose to the occasion and brought my literary partner Nancy McRae along. After all, Jane said, “One cannot have too large a party.”

We began by immersing ourselves in everything Jane Austen and benchmarking her current fandom. (As Jane Austen admirers, we were quite happy to do so!) We then created a quippy, clever, and witty brand experience that delights Jane Austen enthusiasts across multiple generations.

Creating a logo for a well-known literary figure was a challenging yet exciting, task. For a modern twist on an old, familiar silhouette, I created a single-line, hand-drawn image of Jane with the book in the center forming a bow in her hair. Jane Austen’s signature completes the mark.

To balance the brand’s illustrative style and keep the look contemporary for years to come, I also curated a photo library
